I was visiting dad on Father's Day and was admiring some work my folks are having done in their kitchen.
I remember when the new service was put in, and the electrician drove a ground rod (perhaps two, I don't recall). This would have been somewhere in the late 1980s or early 1990s.
Then, dad had a sub panel added (right next to the main panel) to allow for more breakers. (Early 1990s.)
What I noticed now is that the sub panel's ground and neutral conductors are not isolated from each other. If I recall correctly, the grounds and neutrals are all on the same bus bar (terminal bar?).
I thought they were supposed to be isolated? Or does that only apply to a garage where an additional, separate ground rod is required?
(In the main panel, the neutral and ground wires also go to the same bar, but I believe that was from before the code requirement for separate (but bonded) neutral and ground bus bars...???)
My main concern is safety, of course.
