Do you pay extra for your crews who spend all week away from home???

We have jobs that are local and others that require travel over a 3 state area. Our current situation is that the company pays; for motel, meals, and provides a truck and gas. The problem is that no one wants to travel. How do you handle this situation?

If we have to pay an additional per diem for travel it gets harder to compete.

I'm interested in hearing how you have handled this situation and the results you got.

thanks,
GJ

When we have work away from the shop it can be for months at a time.

We get 10% kick in pay, a per diem, good lodging, mileage to and from home once a week.

Flexible hours, OT if the guys want to work, you get into less trouble if you keep busy.

We use our own vehicles, and buy our own food.

About once a week we will be treated to a night out.

The company is helpful if emergencies come up, fly you home if needed, post bail if needed. (sometimes things are a little wild away from home)

The company I work for is spread out all over the state. I haven't had to travel, but our guys do. We have several "out of town" crews working in Houston as we speak. I think our crews get a buck or two an hour, per diem, etc.
I understand that people don't want to travel. The problem with work is, you have to go where it is. If the job is across the state, then you have to go there. The guys who will travel will have a job when times get tough, and the other guys....well....won't. I wish I could give you a better answer.

Will work for food,
Doc

I have traveled away from home a couple of times. The first time I got 2hr a day OT without working for it. It had to do with the way the job was structured and I won’t ever do that again. I got killed by Uncle Sam. The seconded time I got $80.00 per day Subsistence. That worked out because I was paying about $55.00 a night for a motel and the rest was for food or whatever.
GJ this was in Thousand Palms. Right next to Palm Springs. Lots of good golf courses to choose from! To bad I don’t play much.

After looking at my post it gives the idea I travel for long periods, no way.

In the 6 years I have worked here 3 weeks on the road was too much. I am married with children.

But the ones that travel get what I said.
