This is the first time I have run into this when inspecting a home. The service supply line to the meter is #2 100amp copper. The line from the meter to the service panel is 100amp aluminum. The internal panel has a 200 amp service disconnect. The panel is not overloaded even for 100 amp. My question is should the main service disconnect be 100amp and is this a code violation? Thanks for the help. Larry W.

Yes it is a violation. This installation would allow the 100 amp service to be subjected to amperages far exceeding its capacity.

Yes it is a violation that should be corrected.
For a 200 amp main breaker you need at least 2/0 copper or 4/0 Aluminum

Larry, Welcome to ECN! Kudos for spotting that. I met a New Homeowner recently that wasn't so lucky. They had hired someone (they call them Engineers on LI) to check the Home out before buying, but he failed to pick up on a similar situation. This is a 200 Amp Panelboard and the "upgrader" did not change the wire size from the existing 100A Service. Notice something in the bottom left-hand corner inside the panel. Something else that he forgot to do .... Bill [This message has been edited by Bill Addiss (edited 03-09-2003).]

Hi Guys, Thanks for the kudos. I was pretty sure that I was correct but wanted to ask the experts. Thanks again for the help. Larry W. South Carolina

Bill, that looks like a pretty horrific "upgrade." Any idea who the guilty party is?

CT,
No, I don't know who did the work, but I was told that the previous owner was a "Contractor". 'nuff said, there was quite a few unconventional things around the house. I can sometimes figure out from looking around what kind of "contractor" someone was, (from what looks good) but then again, sometimes I can't.
