A story i'm sure some of you fellas can relate to......we pull a permit on an older 3 unit rental , new owner with renovations going on in every end of it.

It's one of those jobs that never seems to end , and it drags on for months , with the trades appearing as necessary

So the owner calls , one unit is being rented on the weekend , but some funky things happening.

We arrive to find a BX circuit , does the whole 2nd floor, some dead receptacles, many reverse polarity

I can't imagine we would drop the ball so badly, but looking around revealed a new fan light install that we couldn't recall doing.

On closer dismantling and investigation a steel pancake was found made to an older buried octagon (the ring was a ceiling medallion with the 'receiver' stuffed up in the floor) >>>

Cleaning it all up meant taking up the attic floor>>>

come to find out , this same guy installs skylights too>>>

I have to ask, where does the drain tube go?? Please tell me he didn't cut it into the toilet.

Yes, as to the 'quality' fan install, we (inspectors) do come upon 'quality' work like that, and sometimes even worse.

It's been years since I've seen anything like this. Those first two pics are enough to cause Flashbacks eek

A pretty inventive solution to the Skylight leak there... smile I too am wondering where that tube goes...

Maybe it waters some plants somewhere? Or, goes into the Coffeemaker downstairs? smile

Yeah he drained the skylight in the toilet. There's a lot of this sort of thing up here in handyman central too, after a while one becomes desensitized to it.

He ran around and 'helped' me with lots of other 'lectrical work to, one day i found all the devices on the second floor hanging out live......with the customers little ids running about...THAT scared me

Maybe i'm just getting old & soft , should have dropped a dime on him. My AHJ is the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet , butcha don't want to see him bare his teeth.....~S~

Looking again, that interior molding sure looks like the stuff the HVAC guys use to cover the ref lines on the mini splits down here.

That "molding" sure looks a lot like the PVC guttering that's on my garage...

Your HVAC guys must have been at the same class our Mediacom techs went to. Lots of old apartment buildings near me have bundles of cable TV lines running through metal downspout pipes.

That makes sense actually, given that the skylight has a leaking problem.

Too bad the ingenuity wasn't applied to fixing the leak and not just re-routing the water.
