I started out in the business by becoming a burg/fire alarm installer. I quickly found out that over 50% of the robberies were done by people who worked in the place. They also had the most knowledge about the alarm system. They knew where the alarm contacts were and how to by pass them. Back then CCTV wasn't very popular, but when the technology got better and they could make smaller cameras, then CCTV was the way to go. Back then before CCTV, you didn't just rely on perimeter protection, you also needed interior protection as well. Such as photo eyes, infra red detectors, we used to have mats that they would lay down under carpets.
