Dear Friends,
Can somebody throw light on the following.

For Standby (Emergency) Diesel engine set and ATS , is their any compulsory time schedule like weekly , monthly etc for load test to keep it 'work" worthy or is it just a matter of one's convenience ??
We have at our site CATERPILLAR make genset of capacities ranging between 250 to 2000 KVA.,for which normally we do a weekly trial run without load for about 5 to 10 minutes( not thro ATS).

For helthcare facilities in most states, running tests are required weekly and load tests are required monthly.

I believe this is from one title of the NFPA but I don't know where. Monday, I'll try to find the reference.

I don't know about any other industry.

As maintenanceguy said you may have specific requirments.

Other then that I would suggest you talk to a Cat service guy.

IMHO 5 to 10 minutes is not enough to even reach running temp.

I would be thinking weekly 10 to 15 minutes after hitting the normal operating temp. this forces any water condinsation out of the oil.

Do you have a service contract on these units?

We install many gen sets and when the tech comes out to do the start up they always set the exersise clock for weekly but I do not remember the lenth of run time.

Is the gen arranged for compliance with Article 700, 701 or 702? The requirmeents will be different.

Ron,
All I find is 700.4 (B) and 701.5 (B)
tested in a manner acceptable to the AHJ, nothing in 702

I would think following the makers recommendations would be in a manner acceptable to the AHJ.

Is there something I am missing?
Bob

Most AHJ's enforce NFPA 110. Article 700 and 701 are considered Level 1, and 702 is Level 2. Hospitals are also special.
NFPA 110, Chapter 8 goes through the routine maintenance for the two levels.

Ok,
I missed a FPN to go NFPA 110-1999
Standards for Emergency and Standby Power Systems.

I should look harder before I post.
