Yes you will see open ground and if you are sure you are connected to the LINE side, the GFCI is bad if it doesn't trip

Basically (correct me if I'm wrong) all the "Test" button does is connect a resistor between line side hot and load side neutral (or vice versa) to cause a small current to bypass the GFI which makes it trip.
