One of the most interesting off grid solar deals I have seen is the solar pool pump. It is a DC pump and runs with whatever the sun is putting out at the time. There are no batteries and a very rudimentary controller, only meant to protect the motor from an unusably low voltage.

You don't get "paid back" from the utility but you are not paying them to keep your pool blue so it is about the same.

That is the one I may end up with.

Greg..

That also works perfectly well with solar heating of the pool -- with an array up on the roof being fed by your favorite DC pump.

If it's a permanent magnet/ brushless DC motor -- then your reliability becomes outstanding.

That is the plan. I already have the solars for heat.

My big problem right now is I am being killed by an oak tree I can't cut down.
It eats about 3-4 hours of the heating day.
I am going to put any PV I buy in a better location that won't be affected as much, at least for a number of years.

Strictly from a cost perspective, would it be worth the expense? Unless you are a small localized grid, night time poco rates are the cheapest

We don't have different rates at night. I just have a dumb meter and watts is watts.
