This is the new section for 2011 NEC questions, comments, issues, etc.
You will find the 2008 threads moved into the 'regular' NEC section.

John, OK, then I will come back to this section in 2012 or 2013 when ever NJ adopts the 2011 NEC.

Just heard through the grapevine that the 2011 NEC will not be available on a CD or in a PDF form that is searchable. I have an iPhone and the app store has the 2008 NEC for $75 but not the 2011. It looks like it's in an E-book format. And it is searchable. Wonder if/when they will come out with the 2011 in the app store? Any other suggestions for getting it electronically with search capabilities? I also hear there is a service for around $15 a month for NEC Plus that will give you some kind of access to it. Seems pretty creepy of them to force us to buy a long and complicated code and not give us the ability keep a local copy of the current version electronically to search it. But maybe that's just me...

fishingmaniac: I have the 2011 in PDF, as it came with the 2011 changes from NJATC. I'll check if it is "searchable" first chance I get.
I have an order placed with NFPA for the Handbook CD, but I have no availability date yet.
I wonder if Mr. Bill has it yey?? I'll send him a PM!
edit....The PDF is searchable!!

I am still holding out for the handbook CD. I will probably buy it from Bill again. Support your "local" businesses.

NFPA offers a download though, I think - that's linked permanently to the first computer it's installed on. FYI, We do still have some 2011 Looseleafs that come with the free NEC PDF Download offer from NFPA. Bill

Do they have a bound book deal with the PDF? I am not a big loose leaf fan. Can you copy and paste from the PDF? John says you can search it and that is a plus.

Greg, The first batch of softcovers they printed had the offer, but those were gone back in October, shipments after that didn't have it. Looseleafs move slower, that's why I still have some with the free offer. FWIW, I just got my free copy from the IAEI a week or so ago, and it had the offer, so I filled out their survey and downloaded it. I just checked and it is searchable and you can copy and paste. I bought my 2011 NEC at Barnes and Noble in Fairbanks, Alaska for about the regular price. They had it behind the counter and I had to ask for it and it was wrapped. It had a special tab with a special offer on the back cover for downloading the PDF version for free, an $85 offer. I downloaded it and it is in PDF with every single page labeled with my name and the fact that it is copyrighted all in red letters!

Yes, as I said to someone (Greg?) above, it is searchable. John, Can you Highlight and add Comments? It seems I can, but I have Acrobat Standard. I'm wondering if people with Acrobat Reader can do it too. Bill

Bill: Honestly, I have not had enough time to 'play' with it yet. If I get a chance in the next 72, I'll try & let you know.

I just got it at Barnes and Noble also. Yes to both highlight and sticky note comments using reader. I wish I could put it on my iPhone, but I'm scared to try. They are so anal about it. There is a special plugin required to open it that probably rats you out to them if you try to open it on another computer. They'll want another $76.50 as it is available through the NFPA website also, which stinks because I am the only one in my company(!) and I would like a copy on my iPhone and laptop also. That would be three digital copies plus the hard copy? Give me a stinkin break...

Just called the NFPA customer order dept about this issue and the lady there was very helpful. She explained that although the download said it was only good for one download, that in fact I could put it onto my laptop also! She went into my account and reset the expiration date from the normal 7 days to almost a month and a half which is when I should have my new laptop by. They are working on the iPhone app as well, but as of this time it isn't available. My suggestion is to call them if you want to put it onto another one of your own personal computers just to be safe. I suggested to her that they should through in the iPhone/smartphone app with the deal also, but we'll have to wait to see where that goes(not holding my breath). Also, for those of you doing fire alarm installations, I mentioned that the NFPA 72 completion certificate required to be filled out after an installation is not available in any editable form to fill out, and that that is pretty bogus also. Again, not holding my breath.

Fish: having the '11 NEC in your iPhone? Do you download it to the phone, or have wireless access to it?

I have a couple of apps that allow me to use my phone's memory like a USB zip drive(Air Sharing, files2 and documents 2), but although I can read other acrobat files on my phone, this one is encrypted, and the little "file open" plug-in required on a PC won't install on my phone, so we will have to wait for a new 2011 NEC iPhone app, possibly like the $75 2008 NEC edition app (but it is missing the tables and charts). Hopefully the new edition app will be better, or, even better, the NFPA will include it in the cost of the regular PDF download, WHICH THEY SHOULD!!!
