Does anyone besides me apply a sealant to threaded and threadless fittings on rigid conduit installed outside? When conduit is threaded the galvanizing coating is removed. Do you advise the customer to paint it to protect it? I am concerned about electrical bonding but I'm also concerned about rust and water entering service equipment.

I usually spray paint the new cut threads with cold galvinized spray paint.

Doesn't 2002 code require some form of treatment on non factory cut threads in areas where corrosion protection is needed.

Articla 300.6(a)" Where corrosion protection is necessary and the conduit is threaded in the field, the threads shall be coated with an approved electrically conductive, corrosion resistant compound"

In Maine this has been interpeted to mean(at least in my case) anything underground but I guess it could mean anything outside if it could get wet.

Apparently factory threads do not reguire coating?

This link is partially marketing hype, but “kopr-shield” has been around for a long time, but don’t think it bears a listing mark. http://www.tnb-canada.com/pdfen/tbcondft/tbcondft_02a.pdf page 3. A similar material is “Fel-Pro C5A;” also Burndy “Penetrox E.” A proven [to me] thread coating that holds up in semi-corrosive and wet industrial situations is “Never-Seez.” For the consummate pipe and wire guy, there is also “Never-Seez Nuclear-Grade Pure Nickel Special” at http://anti-seizecompounds.com/product01
