The next helping of Microsoft's OS's is due to be released on the 22nd of October.
Is anyone planning to have a go at it?

I've been using the beta edition on one of my other computers here and I must say (and this would be quite rare for a person with such an opinion of M$ software) that is definitely an improvement on Vista.

Mind you, after all the problems that users had with Vista, M$ really needed to lift their game.

Here's a bit of a run-down of what is offered in the new OS.

Article at Wikipedia.

W/98 is an improvement on Vista.
Everyone I know who tried Vista rolled back to XP/Pro.

im currently using Vista Ultimate and have had windows since the Pre-Beta (before the public beta came out) and i must say that it is an improvment on all of the issues thjat they have had with Vista, i however am not going to switch over to it, just because i have not gotten used to it yet, it took me a while to get myself over to vista, maybe once its on a final release, i will try it out, and once i get used to it, i will defenatly be using it instead of vista.

Windows vista is 12g big, a real resource hog, Windows 7 is 6g big and seams much better with the computers resources and drivers than Vista. Will Vista be another Millinum? Time will tell. Robert

Actually, I haven't had too many problems with Vista, though I didn't come onboard until SP1. I use Home Premium on a gaming machine and DVR, and do most of my "day to day" work on a Mac.

It will be interesting to see if the system requirements are any different with 7; I thought XP to Vista was a pretty big jump.

Will it run my old programs that won't run in Vista, even in "compatibility mode"?

Will my files in Windows Explorer keep randomly switching views from "detail" to "list" to "small icon" all by itself?

Will my old (but in great shape) hp laser printer be un-supported like it is with Vista?

Is it still going to be smart enough to tell me that a problem has been found but stupid enough to not tell me what the problem is?

I hate Vista so much that I get angry every time I sit down at my new laptop. I'm just afraid that I'll upgrade to 7 and have to spend a month tweaking to get things to work again and end up with even more things that still won't work.

Just wondering:

"Windows 7"...

Is this counting only the "Single End-User" type versions of Windows, starting with 3.1?

- OR -

Does the "7" include the "NT" based versions of Windows... starting with NT 3.5?

Let's see...

Beginning with "Old Windows" - I will start with Windows 3.1, since I have used that version like crazy!
(never dealt with Win 1.0 or 2.0, and only dealt with Win 3.0 on a "to be upgraded" machine). Enterprise will be left out of the list.

  1. Windows 3.1
  2. Windows 3.11 "Windows For Workgroups"
  3. Windows NT 3.5
  4. Windows 95
  5. Windows NT 4.0
  6. Windows 98
  7. Windows 2000
  8. Windows M.E.
  9. Windows XP
  10. Windows Vista

Critique requested.

Scott

NT and 2000 wouldn't be included in the consumer list; my guess is that 9x (95, 98 and ME) are version 4, XP is 5, Vista 6.

That sounds like what I come up with. I just wonder if Vista was really different enough to be called a version.

I'm an idiot!!! eek Didn't even think about Build (Version) Numbers!

On the subject of OS Builds;

Last Night, as my Wife and I were searching for some Christmas Decorations that have been on the "M.I.A." list for > 10 years, I "uncovered" some older IBM Tech manuals, which have been in storage for so long I forgot they existed!

Within this archive of IBM docs were a couple of the basic "Introductory Manuals" distributed with a new Workstation.
These Manuals are entitled:

"IBM PC DOS, Microsoft Windows Second Edition; User's Guide"

Of course, my part of the search for the possibly irretrievable Holiday Garnishments has now ended ...

PC DOS 7.0, and Windows 3.11 are covered.

Remember Program Manager and File Manager? It's been years since I last saw those Windows - let alone the basic setup of a "Pre- Win 95" Window or Icon!

As to the other IBM manuals, found an old Maintenance Library Parts Catalog for the 4701 Controller (dealt with these on Bank Branches), a 3270 Connection Quick Reference Manual, documentation for Token Ring Concentrators (MSAUs) - connections via Type 1, 2, 6, 8 & 9 STP Cabling (illustrations depict Type 1 Cabling), and a Token Ring NIC (Network PC Adapter) Hardware "Guide to Operations", relevant to installs on IBM PS/2, Model 25 & Model 30.

The "Guide to Operations" included Drivers for the 16/4 Adapter on a 5.25" Floppy (not old enough to be on 8" Floppy, but not young enough for 3.5" Floppy).
I do not remember how to identify a High Density 5.25" Floppy -vs_ a Low Density version. It has really been a long time!

Anyhow, just wanted to mention this.

BTW, the Decorations are still an active issue, of which I was promoted to head up the search for the absent items as a committee of One!
Figuring if I run across any more boxes of archived cool stuff, we should have the Christmas Decorations by July 4th, 2025!

Scott
