Is that bad design or what??
Having said that, if you want to use your metallic implement to remove the battery, wouldn't you remove power from the line and load first?
Just like trying to get toast out of a toaster with it still plugged in, using a metal dining knife.

Mike, I've seen the toaster trick twice! #1 was a friend's young daughter trying to retrieve a lost crumpet. She took the hazard on board straight away, a lesson well learned. #2 was in a hypermarket café/restaurant. A bored girl was trying to get to a piece of toasted bagette. I remonstrated, perhaps a bit too loudly. She looked at me with the distain only young know-alls can give to old fools and carried on digging. Blap! Off went the lot, lights and power. I turned and bowed gracefully to the queue, and sauntered off, giving her a nod only the old can bestow on red-faced young fools!
