A 10kW propane or natural gas generator can be installed here in SW Florida for less than 15K complete, including buried gas tank and automatic transfer switch.

While not exactly as "green" as PV, it certainly is much, much, much, more economical.

I'm circulating the same water out of a tank, my potable water gets heated by 3 parallel runs of 3/8 copper immersed in the tank of solar heated water. The tank is made of rubber roofing formed over/in a cylinder of 3" foam insulation with a friction fit 3" cover. Really works well. I have electric backup all developed by a local guy.

Btw, he is working on plastic solar collectors so that would take the copper out of the equation
