I've thought about registering a domain name for a future website for my company. I may not do it for a while (if ever) but it sounds like it is not a huge expense to claim a name.

I don't have a clue how to go about this. A google search turns up anything from $10 to $100 a year but I'm not sure what is legit and how one compares with the other. Anybody ever start a website? How did you do it?

It's not a bad idea if you have internet plans. I don't know what you site name would be but some try to make an income from cyber squating. They register all kinds of desired names hoping to sell one for big $$$. I remember stories where people would try to sell names like ibm.com to IBM etc. for big money. I don't know who won those.

One warning about registering the domain names. MAKE SURE YOU ARE THE OWNER AND HAVE CONTROL OF THAT NAME. Some will register the name for cheap. But they register it in their name for you. They control it and you are at their mercy. When you do get a site you need to point the domain name at your site. For that you need to remember where to go, user name, and password. Otherwise you will be the owner of something that does nothing.

If your serious I would register for a number of years. If the name expires it can take weeks or longer to get is straitend out and you site working.

It costs me $120 per year for my website. $20 for the domain name & $100 for the webhosting service. I created my own website using Microsoft Front Page software. It cost me about $160 for the software. It's fairly easy to create a website with it. I'm in the process of redoing my website to give it more of a professional look. I may pay to have it designed. My website is www.a-linesystems.com There is a website design and hosting service at www.homestead.com I pay for my website service every 3 years.

True but even reading the fine print doesn't tell you this. Any recomendations?

Probably the largest and most well known is www.register.com . THey were the original. It cost me $75 for 2 years and I own my domain name. For that fee they give you free hosting of a basic site and even provide you with a template to build it. I built mine in under 10 minutes. It doesn't look great, but OK for a free site.

www.freewebs.com has some really nice free site templates. Very, very easy to do. You can purchase a domain name and have it point to the site. We purchased our domain name through network solutions (www.networksolutions.com) several years ago for $35/yr. I think you get discout for buying multiple years.

If you are going to do a web site, you may consider sending out an e-newsletter and/or e-cards. www.constantcontact.com offers them for free-very cheap depending on how many people you send them to.

Not sure if you noticed the banner at the top of every page here?

Anyway, Active-1, and Hal have a good point about owning your domain name. I had a site through a company that shall remain name-less, who sold the domain out from under me a few years back. As I too was holding a domain name for a future biz. They sold it as my contract should have renewed, then the company/venture went under, and hey guess what, its for sale to the highest bidder now. (through another company, they trade them like used cars) www.e57.com I gave up! And it doesn't make me mad anymore, really, it doesn't..... (I wont buy it back!) But it was the point of it. Trust no one, or so they say.

As far as hosting, there are loads of companies that do it cheap. Stay away from free hosting as it will wear on your customers and freinds with all of the pop-ups that support that FREE hosting, more like free-loading hosting. (I think the ECN sites actually have some complimentary banner ads, not sure... Looked at one some time ago.) But there is nothing like having porn pop-ups, or other unappropriate content spring to life everytime a potential customer checks out your site.

And with HTML software like Frontpage, you'll be amazed at how easy it is.

Actually, http://www.networksolutions.com is the original company for domain names, then it was allowed for other companies to sell domain names. I would use them if I was a big company and worried about my domain name.

http://www.godaddy.com is who I used to register my http://www.dmattox.com domain name, just because they were cheap.
