Steve: I'll be thinking on this. In the meantime:

1) How far from a fire station are they?
2) Are the roads there kept up in the wintertime?
3) How steep are the roads?

All of these can be big factors in requiring suppression. Most fire departments shoot for a response time of less than five minutes or so. If this can't be attainted due to teh above conditions, suppression is often required.

1)all buildings are within a 5 mile raduis of Ludlow (the town of Okemo fame)Fire, however it is all volunteer & unmanned
(a mitigating response time factor)

2)all town roads, fairly well kept (or the tourists can't get here)

3)an apt Q, as 3 out of 4 here are accessible via a very steep climb, say 25% in some parts (not an ice storm route)

thanks for the common sense, it certainly aids in conversing in matters such as this i know so little of
