I'm not certain about the reference to pin and buckle clips either, but I think one is probably similar to our British clips.

I meant to post these pics some time back, but due to a computer problem I couldn't retrieve them from the hard drive.
Anyhow,
Our pin-clips come in a box like this one:

Inside the box, we have these:

They have small nails in the clips and are nailed to timber joists, like so:

Then the cable is run across the clip, which is then closed around the cable sheath:
{Sorry, I could only find some lengths of 6mm2 conduit wire in my garage.}

Buckle clips are the same thing, but have no nails and are used for adding to existing runs of cables.
Both types come in 38,50,64 and 76mm sizes. [Linked Image]

Thanks Mike. Those look exactly like the clips I was trying to describe above which were used here up until about the early 1970s.

Now there's something I've never seen over here! I believe I've come across some type of fastener which worked similarly, but I don't believe it was for wiring. Very interesting! I'd bet they'd work fine for romex, but the inspector would probably look at me as if I'd just invited him to Eastern Siberia [Linked Image]

So are they marketing some type of zip-tie that you can put a nail through in NZ? I'm trying to picture how they would be used as an alternative to the pin-clips. The buckle clips I think I can picture...

Thanks for the demo Mike, It is good that we maintain standards in NZ.
I use them and they are certainly better than the cable ties staple to a wooden beam.
