this whole idea of sending things back to the maker for recycling or disposal is probably not a bad idea, but even with things like Fluorescent tubes and ballasts, for example, how cost effective would it actually be to seperate the materials and make new product from them, as opposed to new materials?.

And in the case of European-made goods sold in New Zealand, how much energy is going to be expended sending the scrap halfway around the world again to be returned to source?

OI! HEN'S HEAD! [ NZ, get it? ]. Two can play at that game, matey! er...Here's your old lamb bones back for recycling!! BLWRRPPPHHTHTTTT! [Linked Image]

What we need is to employ the power of marketing to solve the wastes problem. People are bloody morons- they'll believe anything. [Linked Image]

Ad. "Insulate your home with New! "Junkfiber". We take the purest household ordures, { bit of French, gives it chic } then simply dry, shred and sanitise it. Stick a few hundred tons in your loft today! Save $$$$$$$$$$$ on your heating bills! Now! in New 'Swarfega' fragrance. Makes a lovely mulch for your lawn too! "

See? Easy! Thats 50 squillion tons got shot of in the UK alone.

Ad. "Latest scientific research has shown that Nuclear Waste prevents heart problems in later life. { true, if you think about it }.
Now, 'Kogglegs' have made it into an easy to digest breakfast cereal that kids love, All new! 'Atomic Krispies'.

Snap! Krackle! KA-BOOOOOOOM!"

Ad. " Save $$$$$$$$$ on your electricity bills with All N.. er.. Antique! 'Dullard' re-built bulbs and tubes!
small print; some of our products may flash a bit and some don't work. Tough."

The trouble with all the fantasy ideas streaming out from the Paper Moderated Slow Reactor [EC] is they ain't market led!
What they should do is make it economically viable for manufacturers to market the complex scrap back to us too, so the obsolete old rubbish, like tvs videos etc, comes in updated 'latest-fashion' silver casings with lots of useless flashing lights and buttons.

Oh! They're already doing it!

Alan
