Agree with you there. The Continental use of a flat, monotone for ringing is rather dull, and the British/Commonwealth/Irish/American modulated rings sound better to me. (Due apologies to our European members [Linked Image] -- Maybe it's just what you grow up with!)

To my ear Austria ctually seems to use a mix of flat and modulated tones. I prefer the modulated ones (or maybe just the modulation frequencies vary since even the flat one sound a lot better than the German flat tones to my ear). The new, extremely modulated ones sound awful though. I'll try to record an example some time.
