Trumpy, over here in england our phase rotation is R - Y - B ( red, yellow, blue 230v per phase). I have in my toolcase a standard Seaward Brand phase rotation tester, this gives me the phase rotation as you connect to it, Yes you can connect live but i try not to as it is not reccommended within our wiring regs or Health and Safety procedures, It also doubles up as a phase rotation tester for Star Delta motor installations. (the main reason i bought it is due to the fact that some of the properties i go to the lables dont always correcpond with the phase rotation !!! )
hope that helps.
Hi to our friend in france as well from all of us on ECN. dont be a stranger.

This model is said to have been around since the 1920s. It's an itty-bitty motor. {Clip-lead color coding is another issue.} http://www.knoppinc.com/phase_seq.htm

Only mandatory thing in Germany is that the phase rotation has to be clockwise. Colors: anything but yellow-green. BTW, this is also why the old flat 3ph plugs have been banned in Germany: Due to their 1-dimensional shape they can't ensure the mandatory clockwise phase rotation. Help!

Phase rotation testers like those mentioned have been used in various models here for decades. Those clip leads on the one pictured above just happen to correspond to the old British phase colors!
Marc, Bonsoir et Bienvenue! Are you actually from France originally, or maybe Quebec?

bonsoir paul uk : yes i am oringally from france and now i am in usa and i do speak both langaunges .
as far for usa phase rotation it is genrally set for clockwise rotaion but not alway be marked the correct way and it is abc set up but few have cba set up as long it have a warning sign but myself i use the phase tester to verify the roataion because from time to time it can go backwards with out warning and if all the cable are black or unmarked then iuse the tester to make sure due some macherney cant go backwards at all merci marc

Marc, We could have used you in here a few weeks ago when we were trying to compile a comprehensive list of color codes, old and new, and I was having trouble tracking down information on the old French systems. If you have time, perhaps you could read through this thread and add your comments.

Guys, Thanks for your input. And also welcome to our new friend-"FrenchElectrician". John, I thought that the UK system used 240/ 415V(no Neutral). Sorry to pin-prick!. I have a set of 11kV Phase Rotation Sticks, I've only used them 3 or 4 times, but at these voltages, you need something to keep you away from the buzzing ergs.
