Is there a site that I can go to, to read the UK Electrical Regs?. As I am sure that they are the same as our Regs, but I would just like to have a read of them. Can anyone help?.

Trumpy, I doubt it. At £47.00 a go I would imagine they would be careful how one can access the Regs. Also it is unlikely that Australian Regs and UK Regs are the same. UK Regs are firmly based on HDs issued via CENELEC (European Committee for Electro-technical Standardization) There may be a degree of similarity given that CENELEC will take account of any IEC standards as I am sure your own Regs might. One thing that intrigues me about this site is the international flavour. I had never heard of a corner grounded delta supply until I became a member. Apparently it is used or was used regularly in USA. How about Australia, ever saw it in use? If there is any particular aspect of the UK Regs that is of interest to you please let me know. You may also like to know that there is a wonderful Technical Manual produced by NICEIC. It is quite expensive but tops for information on electrical installations within the scope of BS7671.

Trumpy, As you know, I spent some time in Oz & I had to learn the 1991 edition of AS 3000. I understand the new version of AS 3000 is now AS/NZS 3000. Some regs are identical to those in BS 7671, after all UK & Aus/NZ base much of their regs on IEC 60364. You can download ammendments to BS 7671 free at www.iee.org.uk. I think you can also order CD-rom version at that site, but I think it's more expensive than the A4 book. I'd be happy to help with any specific enquiries you have on current UK regs., BS 7671: 2001 (ammended Feb 2002).

Trumpy, As the others have said, I think you'll have a hard time finding the actual Regs. online. TLC has some notes taken from the Electrician's Guide to the IEE Regs. which gives quite a good outline in easy-to-read language: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/1.1.htm

Thanks for your help, Paul and David, I would have thought with the new technology being available, that the authorities over there would have jumped at the chance to make the Regs, more accessible to everyone, like they have over here, obviously, I was wrong.

I wasn't trying to be nasty or anything, but I thought that it would be good to have all the world's Regs and Codes of Practice at our very disposal. What do you think?.

I agree: It would be nice if the IEE Regs., NEC or <insert your country's equivalent> were freely available on-line. But the bodies who publish the rules and their associated guides, updates, etc. would start to lose out on the deal.
I'm sure there would still be demand for printed copies (after all, sometimes a book is just more convenient), but users would be faced with balancing the convenience of just ordering the book against the cost in paper and ink of printing their own copy. At the current prices of these publications, the latter option would win every time!

Paul, We were hit with a lightning bolt just last year, when we were told that the Regs would eventually be phased out, in favour of new standards, at NZ$45 a piece, I won't be buying them, considering they are written in a Non-Electrical, more Bureaucrat-speak. Our Regs over here, have been dumbed down, over the years, less and less real information, more use of PC terms, etc.

NZ $45 -- I make that about U.S. $25. That's still very reasonable compared to the cost of "official" publications here. I can't speak for the content of yours, of course!
