Vista Ultimate is $499 CDN? That’s $449 U.S. I can see I’ll only be getting it with a new PC.

I can't believe Windows Vista is gonna cost so much! I can buy a new computer for $300 with XP installed on it. I wonder if this will affect computer prices at all. I'm running XP Pro and Ubuntu Linux. I can't phase out XP totally because of Windows only programs. It looks like I won't be upgrading any time soon.

Most of my PCs are more like $50 worth of old parts in a wood box and I use one of my W/98SE disks. When I'm down in the dumps I build a PC.

yeah, for what new os's offer, might as well stick with your old xp or win2k cd. It's not like MS has really made any great strides since 95/98, as far as "must have" features are concerned. The nicest feature of all would be stability and security and they seem to have done as good as they will ever try to do with the operating systems they have already released. Vista.. *yawn*.. I won't be in any big hurry to get my wallet out.

Windows Vista biggest bang is a 3D graphics engine. However, this can only be utilized with powerful gaming graphics cards, lots of RAM and fast cpus. Other than that it's XP in a different wrapper.

And, IMHO, XP, based on NT technology which is far better that 95/98's FAT technology, is well worth the price of admission. It is more stable, faster, easier to use, more complete and compatable with all current programs.

As a note: NT 3.51 was the only true great OS because it was specified and tested by the US military, not Microsoft. Nothing against big blue, but a mil spec wins every time and for a very good reason.

Don't blame this on Big Blue. Windoze is a microsoft product. OS/2 was a true 32 bit, multitasking operating system when windoze (3.x) was still just a Dos Shell application.

I'm with the concensus here,
I won't be in line to get the latest and greatest offering from M$.
After all the problems with XP, I wonder just how many people actually will be in line.
Sure, the people that HAVE to have the next best thing will buy it.
Feeling I get from a lot of computer people that I know, they wouldn't touch the thing (Vista) with a 10-foot barge pole and many have been using Linux-based computers since the first hiccups with XP.
The high prices of the M$ software is not exactly helping things either.
I have heard that since Open-Office (a free open-source alternative to M$ Office was released, Microsoft's sales of Office have drastically declined.
Doesn't that tell you something?.
