I use the Avira Anti-Virus software.
IMO, the AVG free version borders on useless.
I used it a few years ago, it caused nothing but problems.
Avira is free, yes and it does update itself, you have to know how to set it up properly.

It may shock you but I don't run virus software. I am just careful what I open and I never let Bill Gates open my mail. I will get the latest definitions and run something (McAfee or Norton) every once in a while but it never finds anything.
