Yep, that's stranded around a screw!

Where this stems from is that a handful of guys in my shop, have been in the habit of doing this for years. And they'll stop doing it, when I find a violation of some sort. I'm yet to find anything..........

I've seen some switches wired like this in my house and my house is only 10 yrs old. So it must be standard stuff. I have no idea how u would strip a wire in the middle like that. [Linked Image]

You double the distace you were going to strip, or longer. And then don't pull it off all the way. Although there are mixed opinions if it acceptable or not. The thing I don't like about it, is if the rest of the insulation does come off, you've got loose strands hanging there.

I don't see a problem. I do this myself, as do many others around here. I don't strip off that much insulation, but the technique is the same.

This is what I think...If you dont know what you are doing when using stranded wire, DONT USE IT! Yet, what is the problem with this otherwise?

How about if it's trimmed off flush at the terminal? I do it like that, and I don't have conductors hanging out.

When I'm installing devices on stranded, I'll leave about a ΒΌ" collar (not the inch and some shown in the photo), and I'll twist the strands counterclockwise before I form the hook. The counterclockwise twist helps to contain the strands under the terminal screw head.
