There was a short in the fixture containing this lamp.
It got so hot that it melted an indentation about 1/4" deep X 1" diameter into the lamp. I remember seeing staggering statistics regarding the temperatures developed during shorts, the amount the actual burned copper expands, etc. Does anyone here have this information?...S (Electure)

Looks like a 1000 or 1500 watt mh/mv bulb! Nice "toast" job. John

Electure: Kinda curious to know, how did this situation resolve itself (i.e. fixture burnout, OCPD trip, etc.)? I've seen them before where the inner envelope was completely disintegrated, but not burned like this one.

It’s been a few years, but I think MH-lamp producers have designed in a fusible link between the inner and outer lamp envelopes that is supposed to melt open if exposed to air for ±30 minutes. But now, in Anaheim I’ve heard they use a dozen 1500W models in each of their industrial-grade tanning booths at local juice bars. ;-) [Sorry, Scott. Couldn’t resist… You can post some bad jokes about Yreka if you want.]

It's a 1000 watt Metal Halide. The guys "reversed the optics" (spun the reflector), and ran the wires right over the lamp. Mama mia, these things get hot. I'll get a pic of the rest of the reflector, and send it to Bill. ("Off the wall" memory thing...Seems 7000°F)??...S

Anybody here familiar with a "breakdown test set" used by some telcos? I believe it actually welds copper conductors together to make that pesky cable fault easier to locate. They send around 650VDC over the copper...
