He he he...
The first guys I ever saw use expanding foam was on a large (500 unit) apartment complex.
They were very fast, but used way too much around the windows, and through the day you could see/hear windows blowing out of the framing, dropping to the ground, and breaking, while the insulators ran around like crazy, not knowing where to go next!! [Linked Image]

I know the photos show a gross misuse, but is the procedure shown in the magazine article correct?

I would like to know if this use of insulating foam is proper or is this another type of hack job?

I've read about filling the gaps around outlet boxes with plaster but no mention of foam.

The mag. piece does show it being done neatly (as opposed to those pictures) and when it's a small gap, not a huge hole like that switch (and certainly not filling the device box!!).

The one with the switch would not be so bad if he cleaned up some of the foam, spackled it,and put a switch cover on it. Switch was located in a closet. I guess the homeowner figured, Out of sight out of mind.

i have constantly had to stand my ground on this issue, alone at that!*

my point to the 'foamers' is that the product needs to be listed as to not being corrosive to nm jackets.......

* any applicable links to back me up appreciated.....

From the Great Stuff FAQ :

"GREAT STUFF can be used around and behind electrical boxes and insulated wires, but it should never be used inside a box where it may be exposed to bare copper wires."

Hope that helps.
