Had a similar situation occur when I performed an electrical assessment on some factory maintenance personnel. I had them wire up a test panel with single phase, receptacles, lights controlled with SPST switch and lights controlled by three way switches. One guy performed a model wire loom job on his panel and all the sub boxes. Only thing wrong was he had the color code backwards. When I asked exactly what he did in the plant, he explained he worked on fork lifts (DC current). From that point I understood where he was coming from and was able to help him through it.

I found this panel in an old house in Fairhaven,
Mass.
The previous owner was an engineer on a fishing boat,
and apparently he did his own wiring. A lot of older
fishing boats use DC with the black wire as negative.
All of the outlets and lighting fixtures were also wired
in reverse with the neutral as the hot conductor.
Maybe he was just trying to be different.
All of the wiring was corrected.
