 Click on Photo for a closer look Submitted by Bill Addiss That Ceiling Fan is about 3 1/2 ft above the Tub The owner used to sit in the tub and pull the chains. (This was inherited from a previous owner).

Personally, I've never met a (paddle) fan that I've liked. To me, the appropriate location for any of these fans is the nearest landfill.

Mike, it's a masochist thing. I knew a masochist once. He liked nothing better than to plunge into a freezing bath full of salted ice-cubes every morning. So he had a hot one instead!

No way, Bill.
Anyone that installs a fan in a position like that needs to be shot.
This is just an accident waiting to happen.
One thing makes me wonder though, why on earth do you need a fan in a room with a spa pool in the first place, it sounds like the quickest to give yourself a chill. Wow, Brings back memories. The homeowner said they bought the house with the fan and Hot Tub as you see it, so I don't know the whole history. The Fan could have been there first. It does get HOT in a room like that. Bill

Question from an outsider... does the NEC specify minimum distances between tubs or pools and electrical devices?
I know for sure that something like this wouldn't fly in any country using the distance tables from the European standards - they prohibit any devices or appliances except suitably wet rated water heaters within 60cm from the edge of the tub or (in case of showers without a shower pan) 120cm from the furthest reach of the handheld shower below 225cm above finished floor level. That doesn't mean average people couldn't touch the light/fan/whatever standing up in the tub with outstretched arms, but you certainly couldn't hit it accidentally.

There are indeed minimum distances specified in NEC for most things mounted above the tub. 410.10D disallows most things within 3 feet from the edge of the tub and within 8 feet of the top of the tub rim. Since most residential ceilings won't allow you to mount anything that high, it effectively rules them out (exceptions are made for things listed for wet or damp locations).

I think Residential Building Code may prohibit this Fan installation even if the Tub wasn't there because of height requirements. Bill
