Ran across this today while doing a kitchen remodel. The first pic is after I cut some of the sheetrock on top of the 2 gang box. I found a flying splice (red wire). So I stick my hand up in the wall trying to see if theres any slack on the wire and end up grabbing the knob of the fan speed control. Second pic shows what I found when I cut some more sheetrock

Is the owner telekinetic? I can just see them at a dinner party.

Owner: Check this out. {concentrating on the wall}

(Fan ramps up.)

Guests: Ooooh! Aaaah!

Lone, Perhaps you should reach further into the wall...maybe you'll recover the guy that wired this.

Why do people do this kind of stuff...??

I don't recognize that as your typical fan speed control. Anyone ever seen one like that?

Even I could not think of anything like that. I have no comment except to say nice find. You found a big potential problem

Looks like the fan speed control is quite old and obviously older than the white switches.

What kind of fan was this and was the fan still installed of had it been removed?

It looks to be off of an older Box fan that you would put in a window. I used to have a few of them and they were even the same color as that switch.

Amazing by the way...
