It might depend on your browser settings. In the earlier posts on this thread, the special characters are showing up correctly on my machine. So the software used for the forum is definitly supporting the extended character set.

The "Character Encoding" on my browser, Mozilla Firefox, is set to the default, which is "Western (ISO-8859-1)".

To insert a special character into a post, I usually go to Word and use the "Insert; Symbol" function to put the character in a dummy document, and then I cut and paste it into the post.

I just re-read the original post, and see that you were asking about MS Word, not about posts to ECN. As I mentioned in my previous post, there are many special characters that you can place in Word documents by way of the "Insert; Symbol" menu selection. Also, there are some standard typefaces like WingDings and DingBats that consist solely of special characters that you don't find in many of the more normal typefaces.

That kind of stuff? Go to Insert, symbol, then reassign one of the function keys to be that character. No this forum won't accept the Func key directly, I did a cut/paste from MS word to get it here
