Hello Folks =)

Here we have some shots from the garage of a modest condominium in the Los Angeles suburb of Irvine, CA... The homeowner informed me that the previous owner was of the "Doitus Yourselfia" clan of aborigines which are know to congregate within the aisles of Home Improvement centers nationwide. We both felt he hadn't taken his prescribed medication(s) when he commited the following sins against the bible of our trade.... the NEC...

The 1st pic is just a poor choice of a faceplate &/or trim..
the 2nd pic is of 2 switches in a garage that were being held to the drywall by the faceplate which was fastened by duct tape. No box at all! (there was a broken 1 gang pvc box in the bottom of the stud bay I found later....
the 3rd pic I believe is someone attempting to achieve open air ratings on those #12 TW's... no box, Hey look! theres that broken box laying at the bottom of the pic! [Linked Image]
4th pic... neutral pinched by the light fixture..
5th pic... 4/0 box, unbonded, no box connectors, & no wire connectors, (not even tape! just hot conductors twisted together! but someone did manage to use a wirenut on the grounds ) [Linked Image]
(The purpose of the hotstick was just to prove it was hot in the photo)
6th pic.. Live romex, spliced, just sitting up in the corner.. [Linked Image]

Nice pics of some crazy stuff here, Randy!

On the subject of the Irvine area, my Brother asked me to add some Lights and Receptacles in the Garage of His newly purchased House - apx. 1989.
(House in Lake Forest - not actually in Irvine, but close enough!)

BTW: He is an Auto Mechanic, and had several Friends which were also Mechanics - and "Expert Electrical Installers" too!

I got to remove some crazy and very poor excuses of Electrical Installations from the Garage - which were installed by the previously mentioned "Expert Electrical Installers".
While installing new stuff - all in EMT with actual outlet boxes (steel per EMT instead of the existing "Air" type boxes used by the "Experts"), one "Expert" came by and asked what I was doing. Also pointed out that I was Non-Compliant to "The Code" by using "Pipe" in the Garage - and that "The Code" only allows "Bare Wire Cable" to be used in this location.
BTW, the only finished wall was the fire rated separation wall between the Garage and the House.

My Brother - in his infinite wisdom, begins to accept the words of the "Expert" as 100% true; then begins to site codes with him.
So I get the NEC out and ask for an Article reference to back up claims.
(Forgot to mention the looks of ??? "Whaddaheck is that book???" from the "Expert" when the NEC comes out!).
Gave them the book to search through, and I went back to installing EMT.

After about 20 minutes of non successful searching, no Articles could be referenced to support their claims.
I must have made a point because the attitudes turned from:
"You Know Nothing About Electrical Installations"
to
"Please Teach Me About Electrical Installations"!

Just wanted to toss this in!

Scott:

I can appreciate your comments because I remember a message where the writer (ellectricksion) was bragging about never using the NEC for over 30 years while in business!

My comments to that thread were not appreciated and I was sidelined by the Moderator at that time.

The keyboard here can sometimes get to be a weapon, and facial expressions are lost, so I have calmed down a bit.

The mess of pictures here is an insult to our industry.

Most do not understand how much this affects the respect for our industry. I believe it is of the utmost importance to try and inform the public of the horror shows that are out there and just how important it is to hire the more expensive professional.
