I was in a RONA store today and seen that they were selling a the suspended lamp holder for the so called brewery wire. I noticed that they only have UL only certification mark. I thought that unless electrical products are marked by a canadian testing/certification agency they could not be sold.

Doug,

You are right on!

If it only has a UL marking, then it
would not be an acceptable product to
be installed or sold for that matter.

Contact your local inspection office
to inform them of your findings.

Approval of Electrical Equipment

Rule 2-024

The Ontario Electrical Safety Code recognizes certification organizations accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to approve electrical equipment. Only equipment bearing one of the marks or labels shown in the drawings is approved.

Equipment to meet the requirements of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code must be approved to Canadian standards. This is signified by the "C" outside the Entela, ETL, MET, OMNI, QAI, TUV Rheinland and UL marks. The “NRTL/C” shown with one Canadian Standards Association mark, and the “cULus” shown with one Underwriters Laboratories mark, indicate the equipment with those marks is also compliant with United States standards.

A Canadian Standards Association mark with "NRTL" only, and Underwriters Laboratories mark without the “c” at the eight o'clock position, indicates the equipment is compliant with United States standards.

Doug....

Is it possible that there was a small 'c' beside the UL listing. Many aren't aware that the 'c' mark means its listed for Canada. I've had numerous disagreements with building and hydro inspectors in the field until I gave them proof from trusted sources.

Here is a site that lists the differences... http://www.ul.com/mark/

*** EDIT *** Sorry Tony, I just realized after I posted, the C mark is fully explained in your response.

Hi Sandro
What tweaked my eye was why are they selling these as i know that the type of conductor these are used on is not approved anymore in Canada.I did not look in the wire area to see if the wire was in stock.I knew that I would not find approval on these.

What type of wire? You used the "term brewery" wire in your first post, I'm not familiar with this term.

I do not remember the designate name for this conductor but it was used for tempory lighting mainly on constuction sites. It was two conductors twisted together.A person could install lamp holders anywhere on the wires. I would see it suspended with nails though hallways and rooms in apartments, sidewalk protection shelters on constuction site etc.

It my understanding that the CEC was not designed to be retro-active (except that in extreme circumstances where safety was involved). You stated the "brewery" (I like that term) wiring was no longer approved in Canada, There-fore it was at one time approved. And any existing "brewery wiring" would not have to be removed. Repairs could also be done on the system (provided they meet the code requirements at the time of the original work). My question is this, "Is what you saw at Rona "parts to repair an existing system", or, "supplies to build a new system"
