Actually, he is a Viet Nam vet who came home full of shrapnel. Went to work in a plastics factory where they had a huge magnet used to pull metalic impurities from the product. The first time it went off with him next to it, the pain of a dozen pieces of metal moving in his body put him on the floor.
Had to quit the job the next day.
