The current actually doesn't flow through the bimatalic element. The element is bonded in such a way that when it heats as to allow it to flex and bend in order to hit the trip bar and trip the breaker. The conductor heats the bimetalic element.
If you have a scrap 100a or larger breaker take it apart. It will be fun to look at.
