No expert here, but I would guess the laser pointer is a concentrated beam of light.
Taking a concentrated beam of light and pointing it directly at the cornea, which in turn focuses that beam even more in the eye itself doesn't sound too safe to me..........
As for safety glasses, I just have to assume, that the glasses must block the infared light from concentrating on the eye..
