Here are some really wild (and pretty familiar) pics I found at www.diesteckdose.net. The original poster claims that all work has been done by licensed electricians.

Looks extremely familiar. Splices are twisted and taped with cloth friction tape. About every old junction box in the average Viennese home looks like that.
