I've seen "twin & earth" cable run through all sorts of pipework, including common garden hose. I've even found places where somebody just buried the T&E direct into the ground!
I always prefer to use SWA. It's really not that expensive for moderate runs in the smaller sizes, even when one adds the cost of a suitable box and glands for each end.
