I'm curious. Was this 100 watt bulb being used base up or base down?

100 watt bulbs throw out LOTS of heat and standard zip cord isn't designed to tolerate that kind of heat when you use a drop cord with a socket dangling from the ceiling. (note, I don't advocate dangling sockets on drop cords from the ceiling but I've seen rooms with such things)

I've found maximum 60 watts is within safe limits for base up use and it doesn't deteriorate the socket or the cord. 75 is pushing it.

If it was being used for a table lamp with base down, then maybe it's very bad quality lamp cord? Factory made lamps usually have a label that says something like "Warning, to avoid risk of fire use only maximum x-watt type-A bulb" (in the case of regular incandecent).

First time I've ever heard of that happening. Scary [Linked Image]
