We recently discussed this in the chat one night. While conduit under a slab need not be buried, when under open ground, SOME depth is necessary.

In this case, the weight of the slab pressing down, and the resistance provided by the sprinkler pipe, acted as a pair of shears- eventually leading to the break in the pipe, and the shorting of the wires within!
