Regrettably, I have seen this many times in this area where I live, mostly in low income single family residences. The electrical installation (complete with a single 30a. fuse or breaker) usually amounts to nothing more than one of these fixtures in the ceiling of each room, and MAYBE one receptacle - usually not. In a residence I visited recently (on an EMS call) there were four extension cords connected to just such a fixture, each going to a separate corner of the room. I remember seeing a television, a couple of table lamps, a small window air conditioner, and another cord plugged in that went around the corner into another room. Why we have never made a fire call here is amazing.
