Sandsnow's right in my not-very-humble opinion.
When I get up in the morning I take my shower in water that's been heated by a 240V water heater, and circulated by a 120V circ pump. Neither have GFI protection.
They're located behind a wall and you can't see them, but that doesn't inherently make them any safer.
